Rubbing Salt Ayre in our wounds

NEWS of the latest cock-up at the town hall, namely the million pound plus budget overspend at Salt Ayre Phase 2 (swimming pool), presents the local public of this area with an excellent opportunity to test the integrity of many councillors, who were elected by us on the basis of their pledge that public accountability would be reinstated at the town hall if they were put into the corridors of power. Parking charge

I COULDN'T help but raise a cheer when the resident in Woodville Street wrote to you regarding parking in their street. Only this week I have tried the town hall to see if we could have anything done about the same problem. The council could make a lot of money if these people who don't pay to park on our doorstep were made to pay. If we move our car for shopping, we, like your reader, come back to find our place taken. We even have them parking and then going off for a few days on the train. Sibsey Street, Lincoln Road, Wingate Saul Road are really fed up with it and the people who park couldn't care less about local residents.  more...

Slaves to the art

A MARTIAL art born of slavery - which the authorities have been trying to ban for hundreds of years - is about to hit Lancaster. Capoeira did not originate in China or Japan but in Angola in Africa and is unlike any martial art you've ever seen. There will be a demonstration and training session in the art - which resembles break dancing - at Lancaster's Gregson Centre on Saturday, December 11. But before you try it you should know something of its intriguing history. Capoeria began back in the mists of time as a tribal dance. Young bloods would dance in a ceremonial competition for women. When the Africans were taken in large numbers as slaves by the Portuguese the 'dance' became a way of practising fighting techniques under the noses of the slave masters in Brazil.  more...

St Helens also sent an under 11 team to Tameside, where they were beaten 3-2. They would have earned a share of the spoils but for Tameside's bizarre first goal. The ball went over the bar and rolled through a hole in the back of the net. But the score was allowed to stand. John Bathurst and Jamie Anderson scored the St Helens goals.
